Glaucoma

Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness globally, resulting from increased pressure, or intraocular pressure, in the eye. Glaucoma does not display symptoms until irreversible vision damage has occurred. Glaucoma does not have a cure, and lost vision cannot be recovered. Various treatment options can, however, slow or even halt the progression of glaucoma. When you reach age 40, you should have your eyes examined once a year, especially if you have general health concerns or glaucoma in your family.

Macular Degeneration

Those over the age of 60 have a higher risk of age-related macular degeneration-related blindness. The slow deterioration of central vision that occurs with aging also corresponds to AMD. If you begin to lose your sight, it may be challenging to carry out daily activities, such as driving. Although you may not initially suffer from total vision loss, symptoms such as blurred vision and color blindness can occur over time. You can classify AMD as either wet or dry. Currently, dry AMD, the more common form of AMD, cannot be cured, although there are treatments to slow its progression. If you have wet AMD, you may experience rapid vision loss. When wet AMD is detected early enough, laser surgery and medication can usually help treat it.

Eye Exams

Routine eye exams are vital to maintaining the health of your vision. Certain diseases or conditions affect your eyesight in a way you may not notice right away. Getting your eyes examined regularly is your best defense against eye diseases. Individuals at high risk for developing eye conditions should have their eyes examined more frequently. You are vulnerable to vision loss, even if you experience no problems seeing!

Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetic retinopathy affects the retina as a direct result of diabetes. It’d a leading cause of blindness among adults in the United States as it shows apparent symptoms until the patient begins to lose their vision. If left untreated, diabetic retinopathy could eventually lead to blindness in both eyes. Diabetic retinopathy can cause impaired blood flow in the blood vessels behind the retina. As a result of diabetic retinopathy, blood vessels can become swollen or leaky in the retina. Diabetic retinopathy may develop in those with diabetes type 1, type 2, or both. Dilated pupils can diagnose diabetic retinopathy during an annual eye examination.
